Moving a piano is never a simple task, but collecting a delicate, high-value instrument from a landmark city centre location like The Royal Exchange in Manchester presents a unique set of challenges.
At Kitsons Transport Ltd, our dedicated Piano Removals team recently completed a specialist piano collection from this iconic historic building, demonstrating once again why we are Manchester’s trusted choice for heavy and specialist item transport.
The Challenge: Historic Architecture Meets Heavy Lifting
Located in the heart of Manchester city centre, The Royal Exchange is a Grade II listed building renowned for its grand architecture and vibrant cultural venue. However, moving heavy, sensitive musical instruments out of historic buildings requires careful planning and precision.
Key considerations for this job included:
- Busy City Centre Access: Navigating tight loading bays, restricted access times, and bustling pedestrian areas around St Ann’s Square.
- Architectural Protection: Ensuring strict precautions were taken to protect the historic building’s interior flooring, doorways, and structural features during transport.
- Instrument Protection: Safely securing, lifting, and manoeuvring a heavy piano without putting any stress on its internal mechanisms or exterior casing.
How Our Specialist Team Handled the Move
Every piano removal we undertake follows a structured, safety-first process:
- Pre-Move Assessment & Planning: Before moving a single piece of equipment, our team surveyed the route through the venue to identify potential obstacles, tight corners, or steps.
- Specialist Protective Equipment: The piano was wrapped in heavy-duty padded covers and secured with protective webbing to prevent scratches or impact damage during transit.
- Equipped for Heavy Lifting: Using specialized piano dollies, heavy-duty ramps, and protective floor runners, our team safely maneuvered the instrument out of the building without risk to the surrounding architecture.
- Secure Vehicle Transport: The piano was safely loaded onto our specially fitted transport vehicle, secured with interior tie-down tracks, and transported smoothly to its final destination.
